But before we proceed with the new Motorola R2, let's understand its predecessor, the highly successful CP200 & CP200D family of radios.

The highly successful CP200 generation of radios has been a tremendous benefit to customers worldwide. Not only have they revolutionized how people communicate via two-way radios, but they also offer more features than ever before. Let’s dive into why these radios are so successful and why they have become such an essential asset to customers.

Increased Features at a Reduced Cost

One of the main reasons for the success of this generation is that it offers more features than ever before while still managing to keep costs low. This includes enhanced audio quality, longer battery life, and more channels for communication. These features make them well-suited for businesses that require strong communication between their employees or departments. That being said, it is also important to note that these radios come in different sizes, which allows for greater flexibility in terms of usage as well as portability when it comes to carrying them around with you.

The CP200 radios also come with a wide range of accessories, such as headsets, earpieces, microphones, and other accessories that help improve usability and convenience even further. This makes the radios perfect for any situation, whether you are working outdoors or indoors, in a noisy environment or in a quiet one – the CP200 radios can handle it all!

Please note that R2-D2 is not included with radio purchase. R2-D2 is a Trademark of LUCASFILM ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY LTD.

Industry Standard Design

Another reason why this generation has seen so much success is its design. It follows an industry standard look and feel, which makes them recognizable by users across all industries regardless of where they are located. This standardization means that there is no need for manufacturers to redesign their products every few years constantly. This saves time and money on development costs, as well as providing customers with a consistent experience when using multiple different products from different brands within the same industry. Furthermore, this design standardization means that companies can get parts quickly without worrying about compatibility issues or finding specialized components that may not be available everywhere.

Why the R2 Motorola Radio?

In a nutshell, Motorola needed to make a radio with newer features that utilize different parts that aren't subject, or at least better able to handle the global shortage that exists today.

Motorola's Solution to the Global Parts Shortage

As the world continues to grapple with a global part's shortage, it can be difficult for companies to develop new products and solutions. Fortunately, Motorola has a solution. To ensure that their two-way radio devices continue to evolve with newer features without being subject to the limitations of the part's shortage, they have developed newer radios that rely on more accessible elements and components.

OK, that's great, but what makes this radio different from its predecessor?

Let's start with the design; the design is smaller, lighter, and slimmer. However, this might not be a good thing, especially for people in the construction industry.

The radio also has 64 channels, instead of 4 for the CP200 and 16 for the CP200D. It has an extended range direct-mode to enhance communications. It operates on a secure enhanced Linux operating system with enhanced privacy, audio profiles, and audio leveling.  It now has an improved IP55 (dust and water ingress protection) rating, but please don't swim with the radio attached to your hip.

And yes, this radio comes in both analog versions, for a more budget-friendly price, and digital versions. And the great news is Motorola is currently introducing this radio for the same price as the CP200D.

Now for the good and the bad

The new Motorola R2 radios share the same accessories as the CP200 and CP200D, with one exception. Because of the difference in the sleek and new ergonomic form factor, the battery had to be redesigned.

In other words, the CP200 and CP200D batteries will not fit on the newer R2 radio. The battery will still function properly with your existing Motorola battery chargers, but the top of the battery has to be redesigned for the new shape of the radio.

The innovative design of the R2 radios was made with your comfort in mind. The new ergonomic shape fits comfortably into your hand, making it easier for you to use for an extended period of time. However, this design was one of the reasons why the battery needed to be redesigned. Because of its sleek form factor, it could not accommodate the standard CP200/CP200D battery. To ensure a comfortable fit, Motorola created a brand-new battery designed explicitly for this radio model.

All audio, including microphones, headsets, and earpieces, will function properly with this radio. A new microphone has been introduced with an IP55 rating if needed.

Previous carrying cases should also work, but Please remember that the R2 radio is slightly slimmer.

Now, why could this be an issue for people in construction? People in construction tend to wear gloves, thick gloves. This means that handling the smaller radio might prove problematic, although Motorola claims that the PTT button on the new R2 is actually more prominent than the CP200D. Time, of course, will tell if this is a good fit.

Investing in the Motorola R2 radios will surely be an upgrade worth making!

So, what's going to happen to the CP200D?

The Motorola CP200D family of radios has not been discontinued at this time. Our understanding is that it will be discontinued later in the year. If you require a bulkier radio, now is the time to stock up on the CP200D.

Unfortunately, as of today, there are still delivery issues with this radio due to the global shortage. This means that shipments may take longer than expected, and orders may take longer than usual for fulfillment. We will do our best here at MyRadioMall, but please bear with us during these trying times as we work hard on your behalf to get your order fulfilled as quickly as possible and delivered in a timely manner.

According to Motorola, they have sufficient components and parts to reduce wait times on the R2. Motorola quickly sold out of the first batch of radios but expects further shipments in the coming weeks.
