The number of individual users and talk groups you need to support will determine the number of channels required in a radio system. For instance, if a department needs to maintain its own talk group, it will need a dedicated channel. Similarly, if two or more individuals need to have private communications, they will also require a dedicated channel. It's common to have multiple channels within a department for special projects where more than one operation or event is happening simultaneously.
Furthermore, digital technology enhances your system's capacity by splitting your current channels into two-time slots. This allows you to accommodate twice as many users on your system without requiring extra infrastructure equipment. Finally, it's important to consider future expansion when determining the number of channels you need.
For most general applications, there are 3 categories of frequency bands to consider:
Different bands have specific advantages for particular applications. Typically, higher frequencies have better penetration indoors. However, as frequency increases, the range decreases. VHF frequencies (136-174 MHz) are best for outdoor applications with minimal obstructions and where maximum range is needed. On the other hand, UHF and the 800/900 MHz frequencies are better for indoor use or in areas with obstructions.
VHF and UHF bands are commonly used for traditional two-way radio systems, while the 800/900 MHz bands are often used for trunking two-way radio systems.
There are a range of features designed to enhance your workforce's efficiency, productivity, and safety. Efficiency and productivity features include integrated data applications that expand a radio's functionality beyond voice communication, as well as telephone interconnect, allowing radios to connect with a telephone PBX system. Safety features include emergency notification for urgent situations and intrinsically safe certifications for hazardous work environments.
"Intrinsically Safe" designates that a portable radio, with a certified battery attached, is safe to use in areas where flammable gas, vapors, or combustible dust may be present, based on the approved Division, Class, and Group.
Telephone Interconnect is a feature that allows a radio system to connect to a telephone PBX system, enabling radios to make phone calls using the radio keypad.
It's important to note that two-way radios traditionally utilize analog technology. Digital technology represents the next generation of two-way radios and presents several advantages over analog, including clearer audio, integrated data applications, 40% longer battery life, and increased capacity. Choosing between analog radios and digital radios should not be difficult. If you already have an existing radio fleet and currently use analog radios, your investment is safe for many years to come. However, the digital alternative offers distinct advantages over analog technology if you're considering new radios for a new fleet or project. Motorola also offers a hybrid solution that benefits both technologies. If you need assistance or have further questions, feel free to contact us.
Third-party data applications expand the functionality of digital radios by enabling customized applications to be built for unique business needs, including dispatch solutions, work order ticket management, system monitoring, and more.
Trunking is a radio system configuration that utilizes a control channel to efficiently organize the radios and conversations on the system, allowing multiple radio users to operate on the same system.
Emergency Call enables a radio user to send a distress message to all other radio users with the push of a button, indicating an emergency and receiving priority to talk.
Quik-Call II signaling is an analog two-tone format for paging a two-way voice channel. The decoding of tones allows the radio to receive only messages intended for its specific user and activates that radio when it starts listening to a conversation. Encoding tones allow the radios to send such messages to specific units. This is a feature commonly used by rural fire departments.
Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) Signaling enables radio users to use the radio keypad to control another pre-programmed device to recognize the tones as commands. This feature is commonly used to open/close gates, turn off/on sprinkling systems, or place a phone call using the telephone interconnect feature.
MDC 1200 Signaling uses low-speed data packet transmissions that grant radio users access to several enhanced features such as unit ID, selective inhibit, radio check, and selective calling.
Enhanced / Basic Privacy is a technology that allows a transmitting radio to send out a scrambled audio signal and a receiving radio to unscramble that signal. This helps to prevent unauthorized users from listening to sensitive communications.
IMPRES is a state-of-the-art, Motorola-exclusive technology that enables the communication between the radio and accessory, resulting in the prolonged life of your batteries, longer talk time, and clearer audio delivery.
