Top 5 FAQs 2-Way Radios

We get asked many questions regarding Motorola two-way radios, here is our top five questions, if your question is not listed, please feel free to call us anytime.

Q: Differences between a UHF & a VHF radio?

Selecting what band you want your radio to operate on is one of the most important communications decisions you will have to make.  All bands/frequencies have their advantages and disadvantages. In a metropolitan area, or in a building, a higher frequency in the UHF or 900 MHz band may be a better choice.  In a rural area with fewer buildings, VHF is probably a better choice to fulfill your communications needs.

Q: What is the range of a radio?

There are many variables that affect the range of a radio. If a radio is being used in simplex, or talk-around mode, then that means that each radio is communicating directly to the other radios on that frequency in that area. Simplex range can vary from several blocks to several miles depending on how much power your radio is putting out, the type and position of your antenna, and the surrounding terrain. If you need range beyond 5 miles, you may want to consider the use of a repeater system.

Q: What is the difference between 12.5 & 25k spacing?

Conventionally, radios have used 25 kHz spacing, so if you owned 2 frequencies right next to each other, you may own 861.0150 MHz and 861.0200 MHz, but now under the new 12.5 kHz spacing regulations, in that space, you could be assigned frequencies 861.0150, 861.01750, and 861.0200. This change allows for more effective spectrum management.

Q: Is an FCC license necessary?

The FCC designates different bands, or areas of a spectrum, for use by different industries, government agencies, and experimental uses. Your need for an FCC license will vary depending on your operating frequency, output power, and use.  All FRS (Family Radio Service) radios are license free. To find out if you need a license, contact us, or call the FCC, toll-free at 1-888-CALL-FCC.
